When Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel, and Bill Lawrence were asked how Harrison Ford was cast on the show, Segel said that Goldstein was originally a "Harrison Ford type," and it was made to listen to people like Ford. Segel told Goldstein that they should at least take it to Ford first, because they thought he would immediately turn it down, but at least other people would hear that Harrison Ford was involved in the project, which attracted interest from other major actors.

Goldstein still doesn’t understand what he did to convince her, but he’s cheered up nonetheless.. From the reviews I’ve read here, it seems like people either love this show or really dislike it, and it seems like it might depend on how reviewers react to Jason Segal.
The relationships are complex and emotional, and the very real human challenges are well portrayed
I’ve enjoyed his films and think he’s perfect for this role – and the addition of Harrison Ford takes the series to an even higher level. The writing is excellent, the story is fresh, and the characters are original without overdoing the stereotypically weird.
I highly recommend it!
It can be laugh-out-loud funny and the next minute it brings tears. I was really disappointed after the second episode when I realized I had to wait.
